Money Market Instruments
A money market instrument is a form of debt that is short-term, typically up to 13 months, and considered short to medium term liquidity. Within the money market banks lend to and borrow from each other.
Treasuries
Treasuries make up the majority of the money market instruments. They are a short-term obligation of the U.S. Treasury, having a maturity period of one year or less and sold at a discount from face value. The return the investor receives is the difference between the price paid and the face value at maturity. These forms are relatively low in risk and their liquidity is considered high.
Government bonds and treasury bills are guaranteed by the US government as to the timely payment of principal and interest and, if held to maturity, offer a fixed rate of return and fixed principal value.
UITs
Unit Investment Trusts (UITs) are a collection of securities, which are packaged together in a trust. Investors have the ability to purchase pieces of the trust (units), which are listed on an exchange and traded similarly to stocks.
Unit Investment Trusts (UITs) are fixed portfolio of securities with a set term. Strategies is a long-term one, therefore investors should consider their ability to pursue investing in successive trusts and tax consequences.
UITs are subject to risk; including the potential loss of principal.
Bonds
A bond is a way for corporations to borrow large sums of money. Unlike stocks, as a bondholder you are not an investor of the company you are a creditor.
Bonds are subject to market and interest rate risk if sold prior to maturity. Bond values will decline as interest rate rise and are subject to availability and change in price.
